What do you mean by:

> The failure causes varying degrees of system corruption, including
wiping out the entire USB system or even the entire kernel.

? Is there anything relevant in dmesg? /var/log/kern.log ?

What do you mean by:

> Should the system be left in a working state (following a reboot) the
driver installation cannot be re-attempted.

? Why can't it be re-attempted?

I suspect this bug may have been fixed by now. I suppose the only way
to check would be for you to install Raring from scratch.

** Summary changed:

- [Raring] [Kubuntu] Regression: BCMWL installation from Additional Drivers
causes crash
+ Raring Beta 2: BCMWL installation from Additional Drivers causes crash

** Changed in: bcmwl (Ubuntu)
