Thank you Brian. 1. I haven't loaded Gutsy Gibbon because of concern that it is still in alpha stage and could be unstable. 2. Unfortunately, I repeated this bug as a "new" bug, as I did not know whether this thread would be reopened. That bug # is 128925. 3. As I note in that report, the problem is not limited to Kubuntu/ubuntu. I have the same problem on my Suse 10.2 install. I do not have the same problem on my win xp install. Perhaps I should be reporting this to OpenOffice directly. 4. There is no particular "file" in which this occurs. It occurs in any new OpenOffice writer document. If I create a new variable (insert / field / other /set variable) and then insert an "input field" for the variable (insert/field/other/input field) -- when I then click on the input field and begin to type a value, OpenOffice crashes. This also occurs with existing files with previously successful and re-used input fields. These documents also work fine in OpenOffice 2.2.1 - windows xp version). 5. I am guessing that the problem may relate to a conflict with some other installed program, though I have no idea what that might be. The reason for this "guess" is that the problem does not seem to be widespread. It seems to me that "input fields" are a useful and common feature -- therefore if the problem was widespread, I think there would be significantly more complaining. 6. It's a serious issue for me, since it cripples my use of OpenOffice in Linux, which is part of an effort to migrate more of my computer use to Linux.
