Okay, maybe this is not a very clear GUI -- I had selected a folder with the mouse and then clicked the bookmark option. Was in home, so because home is already in the left panel this silently does nothing. The correct way is to navigate to the folder, then bookmark works. This also implies you cannot bookmark a file.
