Potential fix below. When I ran 'gnome-appearance-properties' from a terminal, I saw a few errors like:
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Warn: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32 To resolve this issue, I added to following two lines: Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "True" to the "Screen" section of my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and restarted X Windows (logout of Gnome and at the login screen, press Ctrl-Alt- Backspace, then login again). After logging back in again, enabling desktop effects worked.
