Now I deleted ~/.pan2, deinstalled pan, installed pan, and now it works for the 
non-SSL connections.
However, with my preferred provider newsgroupdirect, the SSL connection doesn't 
work. It seems that I must use again the workaround with stunnel 4, see here: 
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=653246

I had to use this earlier with pan too, but in the past months, it was
possible to use pan with SSL to newsgroupdirect without the stunnel4
workaround. It seems somewhere something was changed...
