Karl, thank you. Now I deleted ~/.pan2, deinstalled pan, installed pan, and now it works for the non-SSL connections. However, with my preferred provider newsgroupdirect, the SSL connection doesn't work. It seems that I must use again the workaround with stunnel 4, see here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=653246
I had to use this earlier with pan too, but in the past months, it was possible to use pan with SSL to newsgroupdirect without the stunnel4 workaround.
