Gullik Webjörn, thank you for your comments. Regarding them https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1067897/comments/62 : >"I understand this to mean you want me to reinstall Ubuntu on my wifes >computer?"
No. The link previously provided is a daily release of the development live environment. For testing this problem, the live environment would be just fine. >"The computer in question is a commodity item Compaq Pressario CQ58, sold in very large quantities." Ok. Would the sticker provide greater detail on the full model name (ex. CQ58-a10NR)? >"I will investigate if I could find a second hard disk, to do a test install." This would not be necessary as noted above. >"The kernel in question is 3.2.0-40-generic-pae as reported by uname -r" Ok. Thank you for your understanding. ** Description changed: - New install of 12.04 LTS on compaq Presario CQ58. PC came with windows 7, wlan range OK. Installing LTS12.04, wlan range is now 1-2 m. chip is RAlink RT5390 ( lspci says 539a ), driver is rt2800pci. Driver seems to work OK, but this new chipset has antenna selection, and RT2800pci driver does not support that, from web post I read. iwconfig rssi readings are in low -80 when located 1-2 m away from AP. + New install of 12.04 LTS on compaq Presario CQ58.
