I don't know how to change tags, and if I can at all. But the bug does, after all, not appear to be in Unity at all, but in Gallium 0.4 on NV86 . I installed the Nvidia 137 drivers, and the problem seems to have disappeared. No more artifacts, no more rests hanging about on the desktop after playing HD video (mp4, at any rate).
