I think I've made a lot of progress now. Seems like my user settings are what's causing the problems... I added a new user with a clean home directory and gnome-app-install works perfectly. Now, the only thing left to do is to find the offending configuration file... Oh and some programs still dont wanna work but most do work. Programs that don't work include gnome chess and sudoku...
