Those functions themselves are well-reviewed, but they are a bit fragile against external programs breaking their protocol. My guess is that closing fds 6 and 7 for grub-mount the same way we do for mount (and also fd 3, i.e. debconf) will fix this: http://paste.ubuntu.com/5594654/
