further to my initial report:

the problem manifests on random applications in random desktops on
random screens. The only constant is that I have two monitors and the
windows of the affected application are spread liberally between
desktops and monitors.
This is not specific to firefox, but firefox seems to be the most common
offender, as that is the application I'm most likely to have multiple
windows open across several desktops and monitors.

My monitors are aligned side-by-side and I use the default desktop
arrangement of a two-by-two grid (ctrl+alt+up/right/down/left to switch
between them). My monitors are of different resolutions due to the left-
hand being a laptop screen and the right-hand being a 24inch "beast".
