It is true that the 12.10 backport stack is not discoverable unless you
know where to look. That said, 12.04.2 images use it, and 12.04.3 will
use the stack from 13.04. The backport stacks are fully supported until
the stack from 14.04 is backported, at which point the older stack users
are auto-upgraded to that stack.

The bug you mentioned shows that Debian backported the whole drm
subsystem from 3.4.29 to their 3.2 based kernel, so suggesting we do the
same at this point is a bit silly. Cherry-picking individual fixes can
work only when you can pinpoint a single commit fixing stuff. With drm
drivers however bugfixes usually mean parts of the driver getting
rewritten to match some new world order, so backporting gets
increasingly difficult over time and kernel releases.

So just install xserver-xorg-lts-quantal and get a more stable system.
You can also use the 'r' kernel which should be available on precise
already, or soon will be.
