I have found a workaround less horrible than a reboot: use the shell
command "sudo service lightdm restart" which allows the auto-login to
operate again, so a remote vnc access can be re-established. If you have
a current interactive session, it will be be killed (i.e. auto-logout),
so save your work as much as possible before doing it.
