Prior to 12.10, all that was needed to boot with nouveau KMS was video=TV-1:d. I mention as others with the same hardware, but connected via the "Apple Display Connector" port may report ability to fall back to FBDEV booting with nomodeset. That has never been the case for my hardware due to the "phantom port."
