Aah. The reason for this seems to be the "Screen Locker" feature under
"Display and Monitor" in system settings. It was set to start
automatically after 15 minutes, but the "require password" option was
_not_ selected. Despite this, the locker confusingly shows a password
prompt when it activates.

Couple of additional design points: why is there a auto-lock setting in
both power settings and display and monitor settings, and why would I
ever have a locker without a password?
