I think the problem has come back again.   I did a fresh install post
beta 2 (April-07 daily build) on my production partition as my test
partition had been running so well (see my comment 2013-03-16).
Unfortunately the video diver was then broken again.

Now running OK on proprietry AMD accelerator fglrx (with 'unsupported
hardware' flagged on desktop), but if I move back to AMD/ATI wrapper
xserver-xorg-video-ati (open source, tested) it breaks again.
