I just tried the workaround of manually setting the MTU size.

Ubuntu 13.04 64 bit (up to date; no PPA used).

My test consist in copying my photo archive (average file size 1,5 MB)
from a samba share.

With MTU left on "Automatic", the copy hangs sometimes after a few tens
of files, other times after a few hundred files. Same thing using either
WiFi or wired (Ethernet).

I only tried changing MTU size with WiFi.

MTU 700 - nautilus hangs during copy from a samba share

MTU 1000 - nautilus hangs during copy from a samba share

MTU 1500 - first test was promising. 1.220 files copied without
problems. Then I tried with 16.739 files. Copy hanged after only 80
files.

End of test.

Test result: manually setting the MTU size workaround is not a
workaround in my case.
