So, some more weirdness. I was able to get a copy of the shipping Ubuntu image for this demo unit, and it performs significantly better. We're going to do some additional testing and comparison, and there's still a wake from sleep issue as Guest. It's using 3.2.0-32-generic (which I believe I've already tested), but it's running a 64-bit kernel and I had only been testing 32-bit.
