I've managed to find a qemu invocation that lets me reproduce this:

  qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -monitor stdio -m 1024 -cdrom raring-
mini-amd64.iso -global scsi-disk.physical_block_size=4096 -global scsi-
disk.logical_block_size=4096 -drive
file=t.img,if=scsi,index=0,media=disk

This should make it much easier for me to attack this kind of problem.
