Removed the workaround script, suspended with acpi_backlight=vendor enabled - came back from suspend with backlight at dark, neither hotkeys nor applet worked to get it back.
Rebooted with video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0 and hotkeys and applet both worked just fine.
