The same bug occurs for me using the linux-image-generic kernel version
3.5.0-26. I experience frequent apport error messages (I had to turn it
off), degraded performance, and GPU hangs which necessitate a reboot. I
am now using 3.5.0-23-generic, and the problem no longer occurs. I am
using an Intel Core i7 with a 2nd Generation Core Processor Family
Integrated Graphics Controller.

As a workaround, tell GRUB to boot an older kernel. You may need to hold
SHIFT at startup to get the GRUB menu to appear. Select the "Advanced
options for Ubuntu" in order to access your list of old kernels.
