Public bug reported:

Changing the /etc/default/locale allowed it to boot. However this looks
very bad since i installed from the Daily live Ubuntu GNOME cd from root
and hadn't even logged in yet, much less changed the locale settings.

The file was like this:
LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
LANGUAGE="en_US:en"
LC_NUMERIC="pt_PT"
LC_TIME="pt_PT"
LC_MONETARY="pt_PT"
LC_PAPER="pt_PT"
LC_NAME="pt_PT"
LC_ADDRESS="pt_PT"
LC_TELEPHONE="pt_PT"
LC_MEASUREMENT="pt_PT"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="pt_PT"

I changed it to this:
LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
LANGUAGE="en_US:en"
LC_NUMERIC="pt_PT.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="pt_PT.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="pt_PT.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="pt_PT.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="pt_PT.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="pt_PT.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="pt_PT.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="pt_PT.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="pt_PT.UTF-8"

And it no longer crashed, but i'm not sure it's correct like that.
