That's what the mplayer-skins package is for. Unfortunately, it is
broken on feisty (fixed for gutsy though) and has only two skins. If you
want more of them to be included, please make suggestions for skins that
meet the requirements for inclusion:

- they must function with current mplayer
- they must have full licensing information included
- this license must be "good" (typically GPL or compatible)

As for changing the default skin just because one finds the current one
"really lame", that is most unlikely to happen.
