Sorry for the long delay in writing, Joseph. It's been hectic as heck.
Right - every time I install a new kernel, the linux-image-extra comes
with it, and I install it.

This is what goes in - the image, image-extra, headers and generic
headers every single time.  Incidentally, I'm now on 3.8.0-12 and this
driver still isn't firing.

At least in 3.8.0-12-generic, and -lowlatency, performing a modprobe -r
ar5523, and removing the device to replug it doesn't cause a kernel
panic, so I suppose that's a plus if nothing else.
