"This crash dialog" in comment 12 probably refers to the apport-gtk dialog. I remember seeing the text of comment 7 several times during the upgrade, but I don't think it happened until I re-enabled the xorg- edgers ppa for nvidia-313. That module worked fine prior to the upgrade, and seems to be working fine now. I think that the message printed by `modprobe' during the `initramfs-tools' hook has to do with that I was running the "quantal" kernel, wich had the nvidia module loaded... though I can't be sure... since I think that I recall seeing the `dkms' thing run AFTER this error message happened.
I wish I had more time available to run some tests in virtual machines. I don't have control over that right now, and there are some very important matters demanding my attention right now.
