My Nautilus 2.18.1 from Feisty does something like this with most of my files.
For example it first shows ogg files as: ogg multimedia; application/ogg (Type; MIME) when you try to double-click at it, it will change after the first click and a completely different file will be activated by mistake Now the File shows like: Ogg Vorbis audio; audio/x-vorbis+ogg (Type; MIME) You can see that there is a difference, caused by some kind of second file check..
