Its probably not the correct way to go about it but I made the script

/etc/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-top/load_ide_core

it just simply does a "modprobe ide_core"

It now boots okay.

It don't fully understand the boot process.  If working correctly should the 
ide be auto-detected? 
Or does it need to manualy loaded?

Disregard the device-mapper errors in my last comment that belongd to
another bug.
