** Description changed:

I'm running a new install of Ubuntu 12.10 (uname -a: Linux nehemiah
  3.5.0-25-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Mon Feb 18 23:27:42 UTC 2013 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux). Everything was working fine until I lost power
unexpectedly (my cat tripped the power strip switch...). When I
rebooted, Unity refused to load after logging in. I think I had some
updates pending reboot (I'm not sure which packages), so I'm not sure
whether the change is due to something getting jolted by the improper
shutdown or something wrong with the updated packages when the system
  came back up.

Messages in .xsession-errors (attached, along with Xorg.0.log) suggest
that it's some problem with OpenGL. When Compiz tries to load the opengl
  plugin, I get:

compiz (core) - Info: Loading plugin: opengl
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 154 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 22
Current serial number in output stream: 22
compiz (core) - Info: Unity is not supported by your hardware. Enabling
software rendering instead (slow).
compiz (core) - Info: Starting plugin: opengl
Compiz (opengl) - Fatal: glXQueryExtensionsString is NULL for screen 0
compiz (core) - Error: Plugin initScreen failed: opengl
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to start plugin: opengl
compiz (core) - Info: Unloading plugin: opengl

I've tried re-installing the graphics drivers with:
  apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-video-intel libgl1-mesa-glx
libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core
  dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
  reboot

But, this hasn't fixed the problem. I'm not sure what else to try.
