I'm getting the same effect, where system freezes, screen is completely blank, keyboard is not responding (for example, num lock key won't toggle or anything), and SSH and ping and any other services don't respond.
Every time it happens it has been during idle time, and usually after several hours of idle. It happens every two to four days, and after that I have to do a hard restart to get it working again. Running Ubuntu 12.10 (32-bit) with Gnome shell.
