Recently I've got Asus K55VD with Win7 preinstalled and installed on it Xubuntu 12.10 in dual boot mode. I've updated BIOS upto the latest version (406) before installing Xubuntu. This BIOS update changed nothing with this issue. Khaos told how to fix the problem with brightness partially (with "acpi_osi=" mode) and now I have the same effect - changing brightness without notifications.
