Dirk, I am running into the same problem on an nc6000 in feisty. When you boot from the dapper live CD, what is the output of setserial -a for each of the potential serial ports (ttyS0 through ttyS3)? Perhaps the more recent kernels are misdetecting the IRQ/io ports for the HP's serial ports.
