After doing some additional reading on the Ubuntu site I tried using
xsane instead of simple scan. I found that the problem was also present
in xsane. I am going to repost this bug on the xsane site instead of
here since that appears to be the source of the scanner code.

It appears simple scan completes the scanning process it just takes 2
min per scan. That delay is long enough that most people, including
myself, don't wait that long. Note most times after fresh reboot I get
several scans including multiples without the 2 min delay before it
slows down.

I can run a debug but I have never run a debug on Ubuntu so I don't know
details. If you can point me to the the correct information I will read
up on how to do it.
