Please don't worry - I understand your problem just fine and I agree that the installer should take care of it automatically. However it ties into things that are more complicated than just the paper size, and I want to solve it properly since the underlying problem has remained unsolved for far too long. The reason I am leaving long and complicated notes on this bug report is that I want to record as much context as possible for my future self in case I am interrupted in dealing with this problem.
