Dave, additional info.... My initial ubuntu distro was Ubuntu 8:04 LTS, which was upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, which was upgraded to ubuntu 12.04, and then to 12.10 - - - - To get Gnome 3, I installed "Ubuntu Gnome remix" as outlined here:
