** Description changed: I am running Kubuntu 12.10 on a toshiba Z835-P330 laptop. From within windows, the keyboard command "FN+Z" turns on and off the keyboard backlight (retrolight). From within linux, the command does nothing. Setting the backlight in the bios to "always on" turns on the backlight always, which works, but is not ideal as I have to restart to turn on or off the backlight. I can provide any dumps of hardware or anything needed. Also, I can provide the windows driver for the backlight if that is helpful. - Nothing shows up in /var/log/syslog on press of FN+Z, but other FN combinations do show up. - --- + Nothing shows up in /var/log/syslog on press of FN+Z, but other FN + combinations do show up. + + Here is the output from xev. + + KeyPress event, serial 43, synthetic NO, window 0x5400001, + root 0xc3, subw 0x0, time 369303, (671,168), root:(674,191), + state 0x0, keycode 248 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES, + XLookupString gives 0 bytes: + XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes: + XFilterEvent returns: False + + KeyRelease event, serial 43, synthetic NO, window 0x5400001, + root 0xc3, subw 0x0, time 369303, (671,168), root:(674,191), + state 0x0, keycode 248 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES, + XLookupString gives 0 bytes: + XFilterEvent returns: False + + KeyPress event, serial 43, synthetic NO, window 0x5400001, + root 0xc3, subw 0x0, time 369503, (671,168), root:(674,191), + state 0x0, keycode 248 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES, + XLookupString gives 0 bytes: + XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes: + XFilterEvent returns: False + + KeyRelease event, serial 43, synthetic NO, window 0x5400001, + root 0xc3, subw 0x0, time 369503, (671,168), root:(674,191), + state 0x0, keycode 248 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES, + XLookupString gives 0 bytes: + XFilterEvent returns: False + + + --- ApportVersion: 2.6.1-0ubuntu9 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: - USER PID ACCESS COMMAND - /dev/snd/controlC0: jeff 1977 F.... pulseaudio + USER PID ACCESS COMMAND + /dev/snd/controlC0: jeff 1977 F.... pulseaudio DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10 HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=730b5605-4a5a-460a-bd4f-7409fd85c21d InstallationDate: Installed on 2012-10-31 (51 days ago) InstallationMedia: Kubuntu 12.10 "Quantal Quetzal" - Release amd64 (20121017.1) MachineType: TOSHIBA PORTEGE Z835 MarkForUpload: True Package: linux (not installed) ProcFB: 0 inteldrmfb ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.5.0-21-generic root=UUID=a249dd88-32fd-4a50-a7a0-9f561720769d ro quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 vt.handoff=7 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.5.0-21.32-generic 3.5.7.1 PulseList: - Error: command ['pacmd', 'list'] failed with exit code 1: Home directory /home/jeff not ours. - No PulseAudio daemon running, or not running as session daemon. + Error: command ['pacmd', 'list'] failed with exit code 1: Home directory /home/jeff not ours. + No PulseAudio daemon running, or not running as session daemon.
