xkill did the job. At least we have a workaround.

Seriously... I know I updated the kernel, so restarting is required in
order to get the changes. I will eventually restart, but not right now.

I understand that for some critical updates it is important to restart
ASAP, and some people tend to never restart. That is why Windows foces
you to restart after a few snoozes. But I don't think the profile of the
average Linux user is the same as the average Windows user.
