Solution: Xnee failed due to bad data received from RECORD extension
Unlike https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xnee/+bug/378648 it doesn't
crash, but doesn't work.
Had to compile xnee-3.13 from source package, works like a charm.
