Initially this was a question that I posed on Launchpad. I was asked to put the content of .xsessions<something> into a pastebin, as well as the output in a terminal when I started Thunderbird in the terminal. The output in the terminal had the error messages for Glib calls. Nikki from Ubuntu Launchpad told me to close the case with "this solved my problem", and to make a bug report about the Glib problem.
I have. BTW, there appears to be a new version of Ubuntu. How can I upgrade to that?
