Indeed, in gutsy this issue is gone. There is another minor one, which is related. When on vt1, try "/etc/init.d/kdm stop". This will switch away from vt1 and display the remnants of the usplash theme (Kubuntu Logo with the word "Kubuntu" and the empty, black filled progress bar underneath).
