Indeed, in gutsy this issue is gone.
There is another minor one, which is related.
When on vt1, try "/etc/init.d/kdm stop". This will switch away from vt1  and 
display the remnants of the usplash theme (Kubuntu Logo with the word "Kubuntu" 
and the empty, black filled progress bar underneath).  This also happened in 
previous versions of Kubuntu. 

With gdm  no switchaway from vt1 occurs...
