I have an integrated Intel 82801DB-ICH4 sound card on my Dell inspiron 510 laptop, which i connect via the headphone line out to my speakers. The problem is that the master volume don't control the headphone. I could change the main control to headphone or PCM, but that means that i can't any more use my shortcut to up or down the volume, since it changes only the master volume. I think it's related to this bug : https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/41015 during dapper developpement, i had the same problem, the workearound propose by Daniel T Chen worked, and the release fix reslove the problem.
