I confirm that it is definitively the kernel. I ran with the quantal 3.5 kernel for the remainder of yesterday and got no freeze. I now install linux- image-3.7.0-030700rc6-generic_3.7.0-030700rc6.201211162135_amd64.deb and will follow up with the results.
