You can do Alt-SysRq-l to dump a kernel stack trace to kernel log (dmesg). See <kernel-source>/Documentation/sysrq.txt.
When I did this on my machine with 'firefox' in the same state: it revealed try_to_wake_up/afs_cv_wait in openafs module.
