There are reports of ppl having this issue with POP3. But my parents are
getting it through loading a HTML web page which retrieves pictures from
https:// sites.

Disabling the domain (/etc/hosts) to which the https:// links refer
works around the problem. However, this HTML mail uses the https://
domain to collect pictures for products.

Downgrading libgrypt11 to a version prior of 1.5.0 fixes this
regression.
