Happens to me too.

Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal
Installed via Minimal CD

When I run lxappearance from xterm, it spits out the following on
startup:
(lxappearance:4985): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion
`G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(lxappearance:4985): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion

`G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(lxappearance:4985): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion

`G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(lxappearance:4985): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion
`G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
And then, when I try to apply any themes, it outputs this:
(lxappearance:4985): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_key_file_set_string: assertion `string
!= NULL' failed

(lxappearance:4985): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_key_file_set_string: assertion
