Here's a screenshot illustrating the distorted profile.  I took this
after removing the old profile (by moving ~/.gnome2/gnome-power-manager
away), letting the laptop run down to about 80% battery, then suspending
and waiting about an hour.  Upon resume, the battery level was 72%,
which you will notice is the peak of the spike.
