I installed the latest linux-headers and linux-source packages, then I could compile the NVIDIA driver.
As for using the nvidia-glx, it didn't do it for me, I had some strange stuff going on, no matter what I did, it could never load the nvidia kernel module. And there was nothing specific in the logs, just that if failed, so I did what worked for me before -> compiling nvidia drivers.
