Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 12.4 to 12.10 Pidgin no longer visible in
notification area under the menu where the mail and gwibber is. In fact no
instant messenger app is visible there.
Even when I start Pidgin does not appear there. It works but the icon does not
integrate into the notification area menu.
