Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Is there a way or would it be possible to add a mechanism to give other
Ubuntu packages the chance to install default preferences for firefox in

/etc/firefox/pref/

Packages could then install protocol handlers for firefox. Adding an
extra file to that directory or a subdirectory that would be included on
start up would be the cleanest approach, so the package could remove it
or updated without meddling with other preferences.

Emacs does this in

/etc/emacs/site-start.d/

where extensions are registered.

Thanks,
Felix
