This comment on the upstream libmtp bug has indicated that this could be a 
distro config issue:

Unfortunately, it has also been closed due to lack of activity, despite
there being many Galaxy S3 owners with no ability to interact with the
media on their devices on Linux. I will try to test the given workaround
if I can find the time.
