If you need anything else from me please let me know. You will get
prompt replies. I have followed the advice of several forums posts, and
the alsa install instructions, to no avail. I now have a fresh install
of Fiesty (7.04), along with all the updates available on 7/1/07. I have
checked to make sure nothing is muted in the alsa mixer, and I have
check the headphone jack. There is no sound at all. Ubuntu does not seem
aware of this, as the volume controls act as they should. If I go to
Preferences -> Sound, here is what I see under the devices tab:

Sound Events:
  Sound Playback: Autodetect
(If I try to run test, a progress bar dialog comes up, but the progress
bar only finishes about 15%, then does nothing)

Music and Movies:
  Sound Playback: Autodetect
     (test is same as above)

Audio Conferencing:
  Sound Playback: Autodetect
    (test is same as above)
Sound Capture: ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
(test fails with this message: Failed to construct test pipeline for
'gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat'
When I hit the close button on this dialog a short while later, a dialog with
this message appears '''' is not responding - you may chose to wait a short
while for it to continue or force the application to quit entirely. The
application never continues, and when I press the button to force quit, the
sound preferences dialog quits.)

Default Mixer Tracks
  Device: HDA ATI SB(Alsa mixer)
    Master
    PCM
    Capture
    Capture MUX

Under the sounds tab, the only two sounds enabled are the login and logout
sounds. When I press play on either of these sounds, nothing happens. No
dialog, no sound, the button momentarily clicks visually, but nothing else
occurs.

If there are any other commands you need me to run, or even if you need
remote access to my laptop, please let me know. It is important to me to
get sound running on this laptop.

 Thank you .
