Bad news. Whichever driver you currently have installed is spitting out NVRM:
Xid messages
[   54.312000] NVRM: Xid (0007:00): 6, PE0002 0184 beef0201 00000054 f6d4b0b0

[   54.312000] NVRM: Xid (0007:00): 30,  L1 -> L0
[   54.388000] NVRM: Xid (0007:00): 6, PE0002 0184 beef0201 00000054 c23e5560

That's not a great sign. If you are having strange issues like unusual
pauses or never seeing X you will need to talk to whoever provided you
that particular driver about that problem as it isn't an Ubuntu shipped
driver...

Assuming you remove that driver, switch to the nv driver, reboot get into X and
start restricted-manager it should mention that a driver is available. If it
does not then could you post the output of the following:
grep 0391
/usr/share/linux-restricted-modules/2.6.20-16-generic/modules.alias.override/nvidia
?
